The latest ransomware strain making the rounds tries to trick you into clicking on one of their malicious links by posing to be a message from the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Ransomware is malware that, once loaded onto your computer, locks it up until you pay for a “virus removal scan” or something similar. Of course, it will also steal your credit card information and sell it and/or use it to make unauthorized purchases, etc.
This ransomware, called Reveton, also installs banking malware such as the Zeus Trojan which will silently search your computer for banking credentials and other information and then send a funds transfer from your account to one of theirs. Thus cleaning out your account. All this while your computer is locked up waiting for you to comply with the “ransom” request.
