Internet Porn Sites And Malware

Security Key purpleInternet porn sites are, in my opinion, trashy and immoral. And now they’re also dangerous to your computer. In a recent study of users searching for adult content; 63% were victims of malware infection while doing so.

As we’ve previously stated on this blog, cybercriminals seek out and exploit popular news, issues, and yes…even our vices. They infect and sometimes control websites that contain content of interest to large segments of Internet users. We’ve seen this done using disasters such as the Haitian earthquake, websites of popular film and TV stars, and hot topics in the news. These cyber crooks know our weakness is that we want lots of information quickly and easily in order to satisfy our unquenchable curiosity. So they place malware on a site that has content that promises to satiate our curiosity. This malware silently and transparently injects dangerous viruses, trojan horses, and spyware onto our computers when we access the site. As you might suspect, the next step is to use our computer to gather personal identity information, banking account numbers and passwords…you get the picture.

What can be done to avoid these threats? We can start by not accessing any porn sites now that we have this information. Utilize a good security suite with a firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus…and keep it updated. Use safe surfing tools like Web Of Trust (WOT) to help warn of undesirable sites. And be suspicious of all sites you visit and run virus scans if you think you’ve visited one that might have been a mistake…or one that raised the hair on the back of your neck.

These protective actions aren’t foolproof, and knowing a bad site from a good one isn’t a science. And since avoiding the Internet altogether isn’t an option; we must learn to use it “the hard way”, sometimes by being burned. However we will learn to surf safely.  By using the best security software we can find and keeping abreast of the techniques and methods of cybercrime; hopefully, we’ll lessen our exposure to these threats.

Remember: Be very careful—it’s dangerous out there.
