Many times we choose our security software (anti-virus scanner, anti-spyware, firewall) based on what’s available, price, what others are using, etc. However, we should choose based on our operating system, how experienced we are using computers, and how we use the Internet. For example, Internet Explorer is the browser that is attacked most by viruses and other malware; therefore we should use a security software that’s been built for IE and is robust in its features and protection. At the same time, if we’re relatively unskilled computer users, we would want security software that is easy to use and understand; and that makes good choices for us. Our Internet surfing habits, such as whether we surf irresponsibly and make risky decisions, will also make a difference is which security software is best.
Before you throw your hands up and scream that you don’t have the knowledge to make a decision based on these criteria…there’s good news. Gizmo’s Freeware.com has developed a Security Wizard that walks you through a short questioning process that results in a full set of recommended free security software based on your operating system, level of experience, and surfing habits. I went through the wizard and the recommendations were excellent. They also include a very helpful list of ways to increase your Internet security by following some safe practices.
I recommend this wizard, and my friend TechPaul over at Tech-for-Everyone.com has awarded Gizmo’s Freeware a Tech Paul’s Friend Of The Internet Surfer Award based on their Security Wizard. This tool will help anyone decide which security software is best for them and their computing environment. Try it out and let me know what you think of it, and it’s recommendations.
